Creating the Illusion of emotion or why you care about ones and zeroes

Brian Crecente at VOX games takes a very interesting look into the psyche of gamers and how developers can trick us in order to bring out an emotional response. Be sure to check out the Kara video mentioned in the article, it is a visually stunning video.

But at its best gaming artificial intelligence systems, AI expert David Mark says, are, like 2-year-olds, basically sociopaths. What he means is that they are intrinsically anti-social. Getting past that problem doesn’t mean imbuing a character with personality, it means tricking gamers.


A Hero Past His Prime Finally Gets His Chance To Shine

Tracey Lien from Kotaku Australia talks to Adam Rippon, the creator of Dragon Fantasy, an 8-bit RPG 16 years in the making, starring a character loosely based on his father who recently passed away.

When you’re 14 years old and set out to make a game, you don’t anticipate it will take 16 years to complete. Nor do you imagine the hero of your RPG to be a balding, tubby knight based on your father. Adam Rippon certainly didn’t expect any of this, and his game, Dragon Fantasy, is all the better for it.
